Chapter 14

Kian

Trapped in my mind by the darkness, I watch as Kyra experiences moments of our past life together. A deep ache stabs at my chest as I watch us together in the woods. The day I sealed her to me. I remember that day. I dreamed of it many times in this life before I even realized what it was and that it had been real.

The vision changes and we’re standing on the balcony of our castle. I remember the day we stood there and spoke of trying for a child.

I watch as a tear slips down her cheek, and she begs the memory of Bryndon—of me—to stop because the memories are too painful because they are not real.

Something snaps deep inside me, and I grit my teeth as I fight and rage against the darkness that holds me.

Ash’s voice fills my mind. “We can break through. I know we can.”

He’s right. I concentrate all my power on the dark mass coiled around my consciousness, tightening its grip on my mind and trying to keep me subdued. “You cannot hold me,” I grind out. “I will free myself from you.”

“You couldn’t before,” it snarls. “You killed your precious queen because I was stronger than you.”

“But I did not know you were here, then,” I counter. “Now, I understand exactly what you are. And I refuse to allow you to use me to do your dark bidding.”

Gritting my teeth, I focus all my power on the darkness and the long tendrils that bind me. Slowly, they begin to give way, loosening bit by bit.

The darkness roars as the last of its grip falls away and I’m free. I force it back into the dark recess of my mind, binding it in place as I reach for Kyra across the bond that still connects us from our previous life. “Fight it,” I whisper in her mind. “Don’t allow yourself to become trapped in your memories.”

“Kian?” she reaches back for me. “Where are you?”

I watch as the image of us and our castle fades away. She twists and turns in the void, searching for me.

I rush toward her and gather her in my arms, wrapping my wings solidly around her smaller form. “I’m here,” I whisper into her hair. “I am here, my queen.”

A howling shriek pierces the air, and I spin to see Claire racing toward us. “How dare you turn your back on the God of Destruction! He will strike you down and—”

I lift Kyra into my arms and extend my wings, lifting off before she reaches us.

She disappears in the mist and fog below, and I look at Kyra. “Close your eyes.”

“Why?”

“It’s the only way through. If we don’t close our eyes, we’ll be trapped here by our memories.”

“But I—”

“You must trust me,” I tell her. “Please.”

Her blue eyes search mine a moment before she closes her lashes. “All right.”

I close my eyes as well.

Mist and wind swirls all around us, and when I open my eyes again, we’re standing on solid rock.
